The Future Ultimate Driving Machine: The Gorgeous BMW i8 Spyder

BMW: The Ultimate Driving Machine.  To automobile enthusiasts, that tag line resonates so well because it’s accurate.  The BMW brand is arguably one of the most powerful and influential, as their innovations have revolutionized the automobile industry in many aspects.  Their vehicles stand for so much more than just being another car.  Performance and luxury come to mind at the mention of BMW, similar to how the word safety is connected to Volvo.  All of that aside, BMW leaked the details on their latest beauty: the stunning electric-gas hybrid, the i8 Spyder.

The BMW i8 Coupe was initially introduced in 2009, but a more accurate concept car was released last year.  It’s a technological marvel that should boost interest in hybrid vehicles and promote their EfficientDynamics platform.  Here are the primary details:

  • 131 HP electric motor and a 223 HP turbocharged 3-cylinder,        1.5 liter gasoline engine
  • 354 HP total
  • 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds
  • Top speed of 155 mph
  • Roughly 100 miles per gallon
  • Up to 19 miles on pure electric power
What makes this such an interesting story is that the BMW i8 seemed to be just another concept car that manufacturers create with an understanding that it’ll never reach production.  With the video below, this gorgeous vehicle (the Coupe, not the Spyder) is almost certainly slated for production sometime in the next few years.

A performance hybrid is nothing new, but the BMW i8 would be the first of its kind from a major automobile manufacturer.  This is not an existing vehicle that’s been modified, unlike most hybrids on the market.  The i8 is a completely new vehicle that shows the future of The Ultimate Driving Machine.
